Health Literacy: Do Your Patients Understand

Program Description

According to the Institute of Medicine, nearly half of all American adults have inadequate health literacy to navigate the healthcare system. Health literacy goes beyond the ability to read and write; it also includes the ability to listen, follow directions, fill out forms, calculate, and interact with health professionals. Most physicians are unaware of the large number of patients who have limited health literacy—it is a silent epidemic. This recorded webinar will focus on common communication issues, literacy challenges, and risks found in the office practice environment.

Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Recognize three common impediments to care due to health literacy and cultural differences.
  • Discuss the liability impact of low health literacy.
  • Identify two measures to improve the delivery of safe patient care.
