Electronic Health Record Risks

Program Description

Electronic health records (EHRs) are rapidly becoming a part of the healthcare landscape, but electronic record keeping may also result in unforeseen liability exposure for physicians. The information needed for analysis and assessment of the safety of health IT (HIT) and its use isn’t available, according to the Institute of Medicine report titled Health IT and Patient Safety: Building Better Systems for Better Care. In this informative recorded webinar, Dr. David Troxel discusses some of the risks unique to electronic documentation and identifies various strategies to reduce associated liability. While EHR programs are generally very useful, they place an increased burden of potential risk exposure on the physician.

Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Identify three risks unique to electronic documentation.
  • Name three best practices for EHR use.
  • Discuss risk management strategies for reducing liability associated with electronic media.
