Adverse Event Disclosure: Developing a Process

Program Description

Disclosing an adverse event can be a wrenching experience, especially when the healthcare provider lacks organizational support. There is consensus among professional organizations, physicians, and the general public that physicians are obligated to disclose medical errors. In today’s integrated healthcare system environment, all should be aware of the necessity for standardized resources to aid the physician in “doing the right thing in the right way.” This program provides disclosure resources to help with this process.

Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Identify two reasons for having a process in place where all unanticipated outcomes are reviewed.
  • List two key elements in disclosing medical error.
  • Describe three disclosure techniques that should be incorporated into a disclosure policy.
