Prevention of Medical Errors

Program Description

Attendees will be examining data that demonstrate the most frequent and severe medical errors as evidenced by malpractice claims data. A discussion of the components of a root cause analysis will equip attendees to participate in a root cause analysis. The most commonly misdiagnosed conditions will be explored and case studies examined. Strategies for improving patient safety and reducing medical errors will also be discussed. The presentation is intended to increase awareness of potential medical errors and to promote a culture of patient safety.

Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Identify patient safety goals.
  • Summarize the most “misdiagnosed” conditions.
  • Recognize medical error reduction and prevention strategies.
  • Describe a root-cause analysis.
