Informed Consent: Substance and Signature

Program Description

Informed consent is an essential, ethical principle of the practice of medicine. Often times, however, this process is given minimal attention, executed improperly, or not documented well. In litigation situations, the element of informed consent may become imperative in the defense of a claim. This seminar will focus on the process of informed consent, it's proper use and execution, and simple documentation techniques that can greatly improve memorialization of the patient's understanding of the consent being obtained.

Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Identify the patient's rights and responsibilities in the informed consent process
  • Describe the recommended best practice documentation of informed consent
  • Emphasize the healthcare provider's legal and ethical duties in the informed consent process
