Evolution of a Pathology Claim
Program Description
This seminar will discuss how a pathology malpractice claim is initiated in Colorado and what is required to bring a claim against a physician. The attendee will learn of events that may place the physician at risk for a claim and patient safety measures that may reduce the frequency and severity of claims specifically for the pathology specialty. In addition, this program will assist the physician in understanding what motivates a patient to pursue a claim through the presentation of Colorado and The Doctors Company medical legal cases.
Objectives
After completing this activity, learners will be able to:
- Describe the trends in pathology claims.
- Identify three specialties with a missed or delay in diagnosis claim and how they relate to the specialty of pathology.
- Discuss how a malpractice claim is initiated in Colorado and what is required to perfect a claim against a physician.
- Review the importance of communication when reporting abnormal findings to the referring provider.
- Provide two measures or practices to implement to improve the delivery of safe patient care.
