General Surgery: Controlling Risk in the Post-Operative Period

Program Description

This seminar will draw on findings from a closed claims study that focuses on the risks in the post-operative period to illustrate underlying vulnerabilities specific to the practice of general surgery. Attendees also will learn about the top common liability risks in the office practice: communication, documentation, follow-up, medication management and privacy / confidentiality. The program will also examine strategies to mitigate risk and enhance patient safety.

Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • List the three most common allegations made by patients for care provided in the post-operative period.
  • Describe the three most common factors that contribute to patient injury during the recovery phase of care.
  • Name the top five medical practice risks.
  • Assess two strategies to decrease risks that may lead to malpractice lawsuits.
