One Click Away: Risks of the EMR
Program Description
This seminar will highlight risks and benefits relating to use of electronic medical records systems. Although EMRs may offer opportunities to improve health care, electronic records may result in unforeseen liability exposure for physicians either through user error or in a system and technology design error. A recent closed claim study from The Doctors Company identifies how unintended consequences are impacting patient safety and what changes physicians can make to improve the delivery of quality health care. The program will discuss the benefits of an electronic record and strategies for becoming an effective user. We will highlight potential user errors in EMR systems as well as discuss components of a HIPAA Security Risk Assessment.
Objectives
After completing this activity, learners will be able to:
- Explain four benefits of an electronic medical record
- Review strategies on how to become an effective EMR user
- Restate three potential user errors when using an electronic medical record system
- Discuss two components of HIPAA security risk assessment
