Taking the Mal Out of Malpractice

Program Description

Healthcare providers and management are under increasing pressure to develop and implement quality improvement (QI) programs. This expectation will only heighten as new reimbursement models come into play and professional organizations require QI projects as part of their specialty board certification and recertification. This program will offer healthcare providers and management an opportunity to refine their analytical skills by looking beyond the obvious direct cause of an injury or near miss to identify its root cause(s). The next step after identifying why an error occurred is to look at ways to implement sustainable change within the organization. This, in turn, will reduce claims and take the mal out of malpractice.

Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of looking for the root cause of an adverse or near miss event.
  • Recall three systems or processes built into the healthcare delivery system to minimize human factors errors.
  • Describe how to implement a sustainable change in a clinical office setting.
  • Apply three recommend strategies to reduce the potential for patient injuries.
