Risk Management Updates for Otolaryngologists
Program Description
This presentation will review the closed claim data from more than 23 malpractice insurance companies for the specialty of otolaryngology, between 2004 and 2013. The results reveal underlying vulnerabilities in the practice of otolaryngology. The attendee will learn of events that may place the physician at risk for medical malpractice claims and patient safety measures that may reduce the frequency and severity of claims. In addition, this seminar will assist the physician in understanding what motivates a patient to pursue a claim and to gain a broader overview of the legal system. Closed claim cases from The Doctors Company will be presented to increase the learning experience.
Objectives
After completing this activity, learners will be able to:
- Identify contributing factors to errors involving patient communication.
- Discuss the importance of an informed consent form and how to improve on the form.
- Describe three of the top risks in the specialty of otolaryngology.
- List the key elements of an adequate informed discussion including documentation and how it can be improved upon in the practice.
