One Click Away: Risks of the Electronic Health Record

Program Description

Although EHRs may offer opportunities to improve healthcare, electronic records may result in unforeseen liability exposure for physicians either through user error or in a system and technology design error. A recent closed claims study from The Doctors Company identifies how those unintended consequences are impacting patient safety and what a physician can do to make changes and improve the delivery of quality healthcare.

Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Explain four benefits of an electronic health record (EHR).
  • Discuss two components of an EHR security risk analysis.
  • Detail three potential user errors when using an EHR system.
  • Review strategies on how to become an effective EHR user.
