Diagnosis Update: Trends, Risks and Patient Partnerships

Description

Improving diagnosis in medicine is a multifaceted approach. This seminar explores 1) research of diseases that account for the majority of diagnostic errors; 2) insights into a multi-step process using scenarios from malpractice claims where diagnostic failures occur; and 3) review of opportunities to strengthen the physician-patient partnership to enhance the patient's role in the diagnostic process.

Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Examine the need to make diagnostic improvement a strategic priority in my practice.
  • Educate others about where and why errors occur mitigation strategies.
  • Take actions to mitigate risks based on an assessment of vulnerabilities in my practice related to diagnostic failures.
  • Implement steps that will enhance diagnostic physician - patient partnerships using techniques discussed.
