Introduction to a Utah Malpractice Claim

Program Description

This informative educational presentation is an introduction to Utah malpractice claims from the perspective of a Utah licensed defense attorney and Utah law. The presentation will review data from The Doctors Company including specialty risk and allergy/asthma specific closed claims. Further discussion topics will include Utah’s laws on informed consent, statute of limitations, arbitration, mediation, and prelitigation panels.   

Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Name three reasons why patients sue their healthcare provider.
  • Describe how a malpractice claim is initiated in Utah and what is required to perfect a claim against a hospital and/or physician.
  • Apply three risk mitigation strategies that can be implemented when providing medical office based patient care.
