Making Informed Consent an Informed Choice: Training for Health Care Leaders

Program Description

This course is designed primarily for healthcare professionals working in a hospital setting. A companion course, Making Informed Consent an Informed Choice: Training for Health Care Professionals, is more applicable to non-hospital settings. Click HERE to access the other course “Making an Informed Consent an Informed Choice: Training for Health Care Professionals.”

Informed consent requires clear communication about choices, and it is not simply a signature on a form. Improving informed consent is important because, even after signing a form, patients often do not understand the benefits, harms, and risks of treatment, possible poor outcomes, or that they can opt out. This course covers principles of an informed consent, crafting and disseminating an informed consent policy, and building systems to improve the informed consent process.

Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Describe strategies and system changes to nurture a hospital culture that supports a high-quality policy of informed consent.
  • Summarize the principles of informed consent in healthcare.
  • Launch an Informed Consent quality improvement initiative at your hospital.
