Managing Orthopedic Risks [FORPG]
Program Description
Closed claims data from the Physician Insurers Association of American revealed that the orthopedic specialty ranks fifth among all healthcare specialties in frequency of claims. An analysis of closed orthopedic claims from The Doctors Company and the Physician Insurers Association of American revealed that most orthopedic claims resulted from systems error rather than faulty medical judgment or performance. High risk encounters in orthopedics, as well as the most frequent presenting conditions, procedures, injuries and allegations are identified. This enduring program uses case studies with strategies aimed at preventing, reducing and mitigating inherent risks in orthopedics.
Objectives
After completing this activity, learners will be able to:
- Describe current allegations most common in orthopedic malpractice claims
- Identify high-risk clinical encounters
- Identify patient safety and risk management strategies aimed at reducing medical error and improving patient safety
