Prescribing Opioids Safely

Program Description

Opioids play an important role in pain management—both in the acute and the chronic setting. Currently 60% of Americans over age 65 seek relief from persistent pain. However, the dramatic increase in opioid use over the past few decades has resulted in an opioid-related epidemic of addiction and death. There has also been substantial misuse of opioids when obtained by diversion, that is, by a person for whom it was not prescribed. This course examines trends identified from malpractice cases involving opioid medications. It also provides guidelines for prescribing opioids including recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Apply the CDC’s Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain in your practice.
  • Educate colleagues and office staff about risks associated with prescribing opioids.
  • Identify root causes in opioid related malpractice cases.
  • Apply suggestions to improve how you help patients to manage their pain safely.
