SB 483: Oregon Early Discussion and Resolution of Adverse Healthcare Incidents
Program Description
Senate Bill 483, titled “Resolution of Adverse Healthcare Incidents,” was passed into law by the Oregon Legislature in 2013. The bill creates a process called Early Discussion and Resolution (EDR), which provides a confidential, voluntary, and structured process to support effective communication between the patient and the healthcare team. EDR is an opportunity for healthcare professionals and patients to notify about, discuss, and, if necessary, mediate serious adverse healthcare incidents when appropriate. This program will provide training in effective communication after adverse events and provide education and resources to help ease the emotional impact of adverse events on the healthcare team.
Objectives
After completing this activity, learners will be able to:
- Describe what Early Discussion and Resolution (EDR) is in compliance with SB 483.
- Identify what is considered an “adverse healthcare incident” under SB 483.
- Recognize the EDR process.
